Who is REDI?

This project is entitled to Francesco Redi (1626 – 1697).

Francesco Redi is considered one of the most important biologists of all time and the founder of experimental biology.

Francesco Redi was the first person to challenge the theory of spontaneous generation, also known as Aristotelian abiogenesis, by demonstrating that maggots come from eggs of flies rather than spontaneously from rotting meat.

Francesco Redi published his series of experiments in 1668 as “Esperienze Intorno alla Generazione degli Insetti” (Experiments on the Generation of Insects), which is considered a milestone in the history of modern science and one of the first application of the experimental method.
